Dear International Atomic Energy Agency,

50 years ago on the 29th July the IAEA was founded in New York. For this occasion I send you birthday greetings. Along with these greetings I want to convey a heartfelt concern of mine about the work of your organisation:

To this day the IAEA is the world´s center of cooperation in the nuclear field. By its own statutes the Agency works to “accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy peace, health and prosperity throughout the world.” The last decades have clearly shown that this mission is an impossible task:

Chernobyl, Harrisburg, last year's incident in the Swedish nuclear power plant Forsmark, and, most recently, the damage caused by an earthquake to the world's largest nuclear power plant in Japan, have made it clear that there is no safe and secure use of nuclear energy.

Furthermore, behind the peaceful use of nuclear technology there is always the possibility for the development of an atomic bomb as India, Pakistan, and the DPRK have shown.  The current problem in Iran stems from the same inherent link between nuclear energy and nuclear weapons.

I want to stress that non-proliferation ultimately requires that the IAEA stop promoting the civil use of nuclear energy and begin promoting sustainable energy policies including renewable energy, energy sufficiency, and conservation. After 50 years I believe it's time for a change - for the sake of life on this earth and future generations.
